I recently sat down with Matt LaClear from Your SEO Squad to talk about his unique strategies when it comes to search engine optimization and link building … and what he had to say blew me away!
We talked about how to approach SEO, why it’s critical to build relationships with influencers, and how to get into ANYONE’S “150” – a critical skill to linkbuilding and influencer marketing.
I’ve included the interview above, but here’s the highlights of our conversation …
1 – SEO Is An Important Part Of A Holistic Marketing Campaign
SEO is the cornerstone of any marketing campaign primarily because if you’re doing outreach right, it forces you to build critical business relationships that will give you an advantage over the competition. In this age of digital marketing, relationships are KEY.
These relationships can move you and the potential link provider closer to your mutual goals.
Proper link building is about how can you help someone else … and how can you create a good lasting relationship with them. At the end of the day you’ll get links when you can create “value” for others. Value is solving one problem for one person.
2 – How To Actually Run An SEO Link Building Campaign
Campaigns need funding – too many people try to do this for free, but to connect with higher ups in an industry there needs to be some form of money exchanging hands. If you’re smart with your outreach, you can bring in funds FAST and that will supply you with the cashflow to further fund your efforts.
The first thing you should do is look at buyer audiences, and reach out to buyer prospects. Find people that can provide good links – build relationships with them, solve their problems, and ask for a link.
These are often called “Influencers” “Shepherds” and “Thought Leaders.”
3 – How Can You Build These Relationships
In 2016, Matt needed to get new clients. He reached out to Eric Ward (LinkMoses). He had a LOT of linkbuilders and influence over them. So Matt reached out and connected with him. They were paid subscribers.
Matt knew that if he won Eric, he would win his audience and could get fast sales.
One month of outreach lead to Eric shouting out Matt’s book. It shot it from a rank of 52 in the SEO genre to 2 over night on a 4th of July weekend.
The link lead to 6-figures of income, and still climbing.
These kinds of shepherds are what Matt calls “Golden prospects.”
These are the guys where if you get a link from them, it’s going to change your business forever.
But back to HOW to reach out to them … find them on social media, follow them, subscribe, and interact. Have genuine conversations with them. Build up respect, trust, and rapport. Then offer to help them with something. Promote a product or service they have. And when you have something valuable to offer, post it on the website and ask for a link!
Find people who are helping others in massive numbers, get in next to them, and start helping without asking if you can help.
You can fix technical errors like broken links, tech SEO, do interviews, and other tasks. But when they pay you back … you’ll get a TON of referrals and business.
These “golden prospects” have a lot to give … by getting on their good side you’ll get a MASSIVE boost for your business.
You need to be able to enter their “150.”
As human beings, we all have a maximum of 150 people we can keep track of mentally. If you can get into someones 150 you’ll be able to grab their attention easier. In fact, it will be hard to ignore you. By solving problems for your golden prospects you FORCE your way onto this list.
4 – How Do You Identify And Find These Shepherds?
There’s a lot of people faking celebrity and status. SEO tools can often identify these people as “golden” when they are “bronze.”
You don’t need a link audit to find the biggest, most successful people in an industry … they rise to the top.
These people are the ones who come to top of mind immediately.
Start with the ten biggest influencers – find them on social media and see if they’re responding to interaction. Join their Facebook and Linkedin groups. If they reply back to you they are likely a golden prospect.
Once you interact with them enough introduce yourself in a way that makes it hard to filter you out.
The people who respond are the ones become your prospect.
Golden prospect selection notes:
- Cannot be your competitor
- Needs to have access to your customer avatar
- Need to have verified traffic on your site
- They need to be accessible and respond back [need to get you into the 150]
5 – Make Sure To Test Your Offers In SEO Campaigns
Too many people try only one offer or piece of content in an SEO campaign – and they hope in 6 months it will rank. Without testing your offer, you will waste money and time. You can spend HOURS on an offer, and if it isn’t right, you lose money.
So keep testing offers until you find what works well.
Don’t trust yourself.
Test it all.
And also … aim for the fences.
Find people who are your golden prospect.
… help them.
… and pitch them on sending traffic to you.
And focus on doing creating the absolute content you can, and providing as much value as you can for your golden prospects.
