Why I’m Simplifying the Presentation of My Message

Author : , Date : September 28, 2015

Today I’m going to take a big risk and share with you how the presentation of your message ought to always be refined and refocused if you want more prospects and customers. It’s a risk because I’m going to be vulnerable and talk about myself today and my issue that must be resolved.

When I first started Unveil my message was crystal clear to me. I had done the exact same homework that I ask my clients to do and guess what; the results to date have been phenomenal!!!!

While my message was clear, the presentation of my message outside of my blog and videos has not always been so clear.

Some of you may be saying; “Really? You don’t think you’ve been clear with your presentation?”

That’s what I’m saying. The truth is we never arrive, we are always growing and learning and as a result adapting and changing.

It’s amazing how easy it is for me to earn prospects and sales when I talk with people or when they read my blog.

But, if they don’t do those two things I can virtually guarantee you that they bounce right off of my site and don’t do a thing.

In short, the presentation of my message outside of my blog could be better; it must be better.

It’s a problem I have known for a while needs to be addressed and as it has been said; there is no time like the present.

This is a process that is always evolving as I learn from my readers through comments and questions; from my prospects on calls with them and through my clients as I work with them.

Here is a truth I know; as good as the presentation of my message is today it can be better!

For regular readers of my blog and for my clients; you know I love the formula I learned in Tony Jeary’s book “Strategic Acceleration”;

I tell my clients both in the beginning and at the end of our work together that over time the clarity they gain through the process I take them through will aid in helping them focus more clearly on the presentation of that message; and as time goes we all ought to get better at it.

It’s just as true for me as it is for them.

So today, I’m introducing some “focus” that needs some improvement and direction.

In a nutshell, this image that I have created captures exactly what it is that I do:

Unveils business model

With that said, I get a lot of questions from my readers and clients about how do I make money outside of consulting and coaching.

My new focus  will make it easier to communicate how and where I help them above or beyond just consulting or coaching.

Don’t get me wrong, I love what I do but I also know there is a market full of opportunities to help even more people via various means. This is giving me the clarity that I need to scale my fast growing business.

I have given this a lot of thought over the last few months and I now have answers.

Unveil University

Some people learn best through academic settings and if you love a classroom type environment then Unveil University will be a great learning place for you.

This “live” online, classroom setting will afford business owners, entrepreneurs and marketers an opportunity to learn more about messaging and strategies through a strong curriculum, weekly homework and live interactive engagement.

At the beginning of each semester there will be a syllabus and a list of expectations. Including in the program will be a group project where students will help one another learn and improve their messaging.

The program will be demanding but if seen through will have major benefits for each student both personally and for the business.

The final grade will be determined by each student on how well they take what they learn, apply it and use it to grow and benefit their business.

Online Training’s

While I give a ton of great information for free in my blog, webinars and videos I also know that there is a place to utilize pre-recorded, high quality training’s that people can access and use to help their marketing efforts.

Each training will be priced reasonably in order to help as many businesses as possible achieve their clarity, focus and execution efforts.

The-Shift-Bookcover-smallYes, I will be starting a new eBook soon thanks to the success of “The Shift – The Fast Paced Transition from Mass Marketing to Context Marketing.

I have been asked if my books will be available in print; I’m working on that but it remains to be seen at this moment.

Now that you see this and the simplicity of the presentation of my business model and how I will use it to scale my business I hope it will inspire you to think “simple” when it comes to the presentation of your message.

It really doesn’t matter what business you are in; it matters what business you are “really” in from the customers point of view; meaning how well are they identifying with you and how easy is it for them to have a reason to buy from you?

People understand simple and they buy simple.

The more complex you make the presentation of your message the least likely it will be that people buy from you.

It’s amazing isn’t it how complex we can make simple things?

I shudder to think of how many people felt overwhelmed by my content on the “Begin Here” and Service pages and didn’t buy because it felt complex to them even though it made great sense to me.

While the message was right, the delivery may not have been.

So, it’s time to demonstrate my clarity through focus!

I have simplified the “Begin Here” (which will include the image above) and made it much more clearer and in alignment with my consistent message. The service page has disappeared and all of mys ervices /and products now appear at the bottom of the “Begin Here” page.

If someone chooses not to buy from me it won’t be because they were overwhelmed or didn’t understand how to buy me. It will be for a reason that is out of my control.

To those who have shared with me, I have heard your message loud and clear and I’m excited to get this done for both me and for you!

Perhaps your presentation is a mess and people are not buying from you because you don’t have a real message that is inspiring, relevant, compelling or interesting.

If you’re not crystal clear and you want to learn how to create a dynamic message that you can use to begin tweaking your presentation and earn more sales then please contact me today.

You can schedule a 1-on-1 free consultation with me right now.

You can also check the “Begin Here” page and learn more.

I hope to hear from you soon!

  1. Hi Don,

My wife and I were driving home from Home Depot today talking about some of our business plans for the next 3-6 months… when I found myself saying out loud,

I think you got it in stuck in my head, dude. 🙂

    Have an awesome day,

    1. Hi Brent,

I’m so sorry I didn’t get to your comment sooner. I haven’t been this sick in 20 years and I’m starting to get on the mend.

I’m excited that I’m resonating with you, lol… That’s absolutely awesome!!!!!!!

Now, what to do with what you’re learning?

      Have a great week Brent!

  2. Hi Don,

I find it beautiful how people on the same wavelength harmonize.

We all take different journeys yet we’re also moving toward who we really are, that being, being….beyond our comprehension really. So your journey is awesome, and where you’re at now is awesome because immense power and freedom is found in the most simple of messages. As for the harmonizing note, I experienced a massive shift in my brand direction last week; that’s that I believe it’s neat how you and I are experiencing big shifts to keep things simple.

I am letting go much of how I did things to become more free, more clear and to become more aligned with my calling. In some ways this is a complete 360 because I had a cleaner, clearer intent when I started Blogging from Paradise. I was largely detached then on the blog but over time my attachments muddled up my clarity. Seeing this, I have moved in a clearer, less hectic, more peaceful direction, focused on connecting with what I most love doing and focused on connecting with my ideal reader.

I’m not quite sure where I’m headed so I know that I’m doing it right 😉 Seriously though, I do feel much better these days because like you, I’m simplifying, and any time that we make things more simple we unleash a power we hadn’t uncovered yet….that same power which frees a bunch of folks….i.e…..our audiences.

Well done Don. I am excited to follow your journey.

    1. Hi Ryan,

You’re so right, it’s the simple things that many times are the most powerful!

I’ve been noticing and watching your shifts for a while and the beauty of what you do is that you are flexible enough to make those shifts and become what you want to be.

As always, I’m enjoying watching you go through your journey!

  3. Hey Don,

Another great post on the emphasis of being clear on what business you’re really in.

The epiphany came to be when I started to evaluate myself. I saw what I was looking for, what I wanted to achieve and how I wanted to achieve it.

So I created a profile that was the spinning image of who I am. And you know what? I began to attract more people who were like me. We’ll at least I took notice of it 😉

With that knowledge I started to pin my marketing down bit by bit. Especially with my blog. I found out what others want based on what I want and this is definitely a great start!

Thanks for sharing another great post Don! I hope you’re enjoying your week!

    1. Hi Sherman,

I’m super happy for your success!!! Starting with what you want can be a good place and in fact with my clients we start with the passions they passionate about solving… that always deals with them and points them in the right direction as a foundation for their messaging.

Keep up the great work Sherman!

      ~ Don

  4. Hi Don

Looks like you’re on another winner!

You’ve been on a great growth curve for more than a year and this simplification project will no doubt keep the momentum happening.

It’s so easy to complicate thing, eh Don? I am the world’s worst at this and have to smack myself in the face when I do it. Ouch!

I hope to support you (in some small way) on your exciting journey

    You rock!

    1. Hi Kim,

THANK YOU so much for the encouragement! That’s the goal Kim, keep the momentum going.

It’s so easy to complicate things. Even when it’s simple for me that doesn’t mean it is for the visitor. The truth is that the message was clear on the Begin Here page but the presentation of simple is relative when introducing new ideas and concepts.

So, if the presentation isn’t clear then in reality neither is the message, right?

That has to be fixed ASAP!

So many are visiting that page and doing nothing and as I have watched the analytics that told me with loud alarm there was a problem. As I studied and evaluated it, the problem became obvious.

I so appreciate your support Kim!

      Have a great week.

      ~ Don

  5. Hi Don,

Good to be back after my break 🙂

Coming to the post, I think everybody needs to evolve and improve, and that just includes everybody. I’ve also changed my course and changing some of my blogging ways gradually. Actually, change for the better is very good for any business, isn’t it? I like the change you are taking. Yes, refining and refocusing should be a part of the business policies.

I love your idea of Unveil University. It seems you’ve done good homework on it and it sounds great! I agree that simplicity sells quickly and easily, when it comes to masses. And a simple presentation if more effective.

I wish you all the best with your changes and I’m sure it will being you more achievements and success.

Thanks for sharing your message with us. Have a nice week ahead 🙂

    1. Hi Harleena,

WOW! It’s so nice to see you. I have to admit, I’ve missed you. But, I’ve also been patiently and expectantly waiting on your new blog launch.

You are so right, it’s a constant process of improvement. It doesn’t just happen overnight and the truth is as we mature in our businesses so does our presentation.

I’m really looking forward to Unveil University. The goal is to start small and build for the long-term. No shortcuts, just the right people with a right heart to learn.

Thanks again for stopping by, it really is a joy and treat when I get to interact with you.

      Have an amazing week!

      ~ Don

  6. Hi Don,

I like the direction you’re taking. I look forward to seeing what “start here” looks like on October 2nd. You hit on something important here in my opinion Don. SIMPLE. As an old sales adage goes – keep it simple, stupid. Which means keeping it very simple for your prospect to buy from you.

Like you mentioned even if we think that our message is explained simply chances are our prospects feel differently. Keep it simple and less is more. This is easier said than done as you know. I like most everyone else learned that the hard way.

Good stuff Don. I’ll be sure to tweet.

    1. Hi Kurt,

Thank you, I appreciate your encouragement! I’ll be working on the pages most of today so who knows, maybe I’ll be done ahead of schedule?

Simple… it’s so easy to lose site of it and it’s a lesson I will never forget!!!! I knew the message was clear on the Begin Here page but the presentation of simple is relative when introducing new ideas and concepts.

So, if the presentation isn’t clear then in reality neither is the message, right?

Thanks so much for reading and sharing Kurt. I’ve really enjoyed your comments and thank you so much for being a loyal visitor this past month. It’s been great getting to know you “virtually.”

      Have an awesome week!

      ~ Don

  7. What an inspiring message Don. I for one look forward to the changes you are lining up for here on your website/blog.

A few weeks ago one of my regular blog commenters/readers made note that he was overwhelmed with some of the titles in my weekly round up posts: 42 ways to …. 23 images about … 12 top tips for ….

Yikes, his reminder started my head spinning to the degree that I am scouring my own shares with more scrutiny.

So your explanation of why your are simplifying the presentation of your message rang true for me in more than one way! Thanks for this reminder.

    1. Hi Patricia,

Thank you so much for the very kind words! The changes are a little past due but as I think about it I’m ready to make the necessary changes for my audience.

The “Begin Here” page is just too overwhelming and you know what happens when people get overwhelmed; they do nothing. Who can blame them?

So glad the message today was helpful to you. I’ll be your site shortly. With all the work I’ve been putting in of late on this project and preparing the new webinar for SEMrush’s initial launch I’ve been MIA of late.

I hope you have a great week Patricia.

      ~ Don

  8. Hi Don,

I do believe the changes you are making will be so effective. Keeping things simple for people is always on my mind. It can be a blog post, or a video..whatever. But it all has to correlate with the business we are in. This is why I like short videos on a blog post which you have done here. The message via words are great, but the face to face short video really makes you approachable.

We have to have a blueprint of our business. Indeed, it is a process, but everything we do online has to keep focusing on one thing: the business we are in. What we can do for others to help them. Sounds so easy, but it does take a lot of strategic planning.

I have to say I like the picture of your white board…reminds me of mine because as you know David and I work as a team and without that weekly white board, we would be lost. The grand goal is there, but simple steps need to be taken.

I am so happy for you Don “Unveil University” shouts out here is a place to learn. Brilliant!

    1. Good Morning Donna,

I believe the changes will have a profound impact as well. I was just sitting at my desk over the weekend when looking at my analytics and the page views for the “Begin Here” page are staggering and time on page is staggering.

So why is that few are clicking through to a service?

It really is an easy answer… it is just too complicated in one sitting to digest and then once overwhelmed there is no action. It’s easy human nature and psychology to understand.

Sometimes though it takes some experimentation. I thought it was clear; and to me it is very clear. But to someone being introduced to these concepts that are very different than what many are teaching I can understand why it seems so difficult to get and then know what to buy in order to get the right help.

I love doing videos. As you probably know, I try to do at least one short video a day during the work week.

So, I’m excited to change it up this week and simplify it significantly.

I love my whiteboard, it just helps me visually see things, change things and then settle on it once I can take just take a glance. I’m a very visual person so just seeing it on a screen doesn’t always work for me.

Thanks so much for your encouragement and kind words. I cannot express my gratitude to you enough!

      Have a great week Donna!

      ~ Don

  9. Hey Don,

Well I see what you mean and why some people were confused.

I remember coming to your site early on and I read through what you were sharing but I wasn’t clear on your message either. I also need things explained to me in simple terms so I totally get that.

Do you remember our first client session? How many sessions did it take before the bells started sounding and I finally “got it”? I think that’s because of us as well so it’s not just you. It’s because some of us understand that what we are doing either isn’t working or it’s not the direction we want to go. Our problem though is not knowing how to fix it. That’s what you’re great with helping us with but I also agree that we all do so much better after we’ve had an initial conversation with you. You just explain things so well.

I have no doubt though that whatever changes you make will be improvements. I’m also excited that you’re moving forward outside of what you do so well and bringing what you teach to people to different platforms. I think they will all be very successful Don and I applaud you for taking all of this on. You’re going to be one super busy guy my friend.

I wish you the very best…

    1. Hi Adrienne,

It is a process sometimes, isn’t it? I do remember our first meeting and I remember asking you to stay with it and just focus on the task in front of you and not worry about the end result.

It’s paying off for you big time!

Sometimes those of us consulting and coaching can see things in others better than we do for ourselves. I have known for a while I needed to address this area and it’s high time, lol…

The ability to converse has been a big boom to my business; but as I said in the article I think that earning those opportunities will come as I simplify my message. It shouldn’t feel as complex as it is right now on the Begin Here page.

I got ahead of myself a bit there so lesson learned, lol…

I so appreciate your comment and I hope you have a fantastic week Adrienne!

      ~ Don

  10. Hi Don,

Very inspiring, and I know that in a few weeks I’ll be so much more clear about what I’m offering to people that I may be doing the same thing you’re about to do on your site.

I think that it’s so true. The simpler things are the more chance we have to get people to hire our services, because there is no chance they will if they are confused.

Thanks for another great message and will be sharing.

    1. Hi Sylviane,

I’m very confident you will be. It’s interesting that sometimes one can be very clear but the presentation of the message can be off due to too much information. I’m excited to be coaching you on your message!

There is always a more simple way to say it and haven’t found that is really exciting!

Thanks so much for sharing Sylviane.

      ~ Don
