How long have you been online?
Is your business doing well?
Are you converting those visitors from your site into paying clients?
If your answer was no then why?
I think those questions are simple enough. I mean you are serious about building your business so I’m sure you’re super focused on what to do, when to do it and how to do it right!
I was too and I’ve been online now for eight years. Eight very l-o-n-g and hard years.
My name is Adrienne Smith and I want to share with you my story and why I decided to work with Don.
Eight Years To Success
I won’t bore you with my entire story but if you would like to read about my humble beginnings you can just click here.
For me, things really started happening at the beginning of 2011.
I love to learn so I would buy courses mostly, go through them, apply what I’d learned yet still never really get my desired results. At that time I was doing affiliate marketing so I wanted to learn how to build that particular business from scratch so I purchased another course and dove in head first.
Like Don has done when he first started his blog, I put myself out there. I was everywhere you turned. People couldn’t help but see my comments on almost every post they visited.
My comments are like mini posts though because I always seem to have a lot to say. That got people’s attention so here they came. It only took me four months before I started to see some steady repeat traffic and comments too. It was closing in around 30 by that time.
At the end of 2011, Danny Iny of Firepole Marketing, wrote a book titled “Engagement from Scratch”. He interviewed a lot of authority figures at that time about how important engagement really was. In honor of his book release he held a contest asking his audience to nominate who they thought was the most engaging person online.
A friend of mine nominated me without me knowing and I won the coveted title of “Engagement Superstar”.
Best thing that could have EVER happened to me.
My Very First Product
Since I had won Danny’s contest that helped put me on his radar. He was very impressed with my community and just how loyal they were to me.
That summer he emailed me and we set up a time to speak on the phone. He wanted to know more about me, the person, and how I was doing with my business.
He asked me if I had any intentions of creating a product so I told him my ideas.
Want to know what he asked me next?
Is that what your audience wants from you?
I told him no but it was a great product and he agreed with me. The problem was that it wasn’t what my audience wanted and that’s the same mistake he had made in the beginning of his career.
They wanted a course teaching them how to build a community like the one I had. Everyone kept wanting to know how I was able to not only get that many comments on each of my posts, most of them are way over 100, but have them leave actual conversations.
After he gave me some very solid advice I decided to give my audience what they had been asking for the past year and a half. I started creating my product around the beginning of 2014 and even ended up following a course he had created about how to go about doing this the right way. Best thing I could have ever done too.
Just in case you’re curious the name of my course is “Build a Blog Community” and it will be a year old on November 17th. I’m very proud of it, I share everything I personally did to build my own community and it still brings in sales every single month without me even promoting it.
The Next Step of My Business
The product was out and I was so very proud of this accomplishment.
Around the beginning of 2014 I had incorporated consulting into my business only because my audience wanted to work with me one on one. The personal touch you could say.
Isn’t that cool that’s how this all evolved?
So I started my consulting practice but my issue was that everyone knew me only as the “Engagement Superstar”. My audience considered me a relationship expert.
Relationships are HUGE and I’m thrilled that I can help people in this way but that’s not all there is to this. I wanted to be known for more than just helping people build relationships, I wanted to help them move forward with their blogs.
It was probably around the summer of 2014 that I first met Don so we had built up a relationship over time and he’s someone that I can honestly now call a good friend.
He asked me how I was doing with things one day and I mentioned how confused I was especially after having read his book, “The Shift”.
I told him that I knew where my heart was regarding my business and I knew who I wanted to help but I wasn’t moving in that direction. I had a few other issues too.
- I didn’t want to disappoint my current audience because they had been SO loyal to me
- I was scared to practically start over
- I didn’t know how to go about making this drastic change
- I wasn’t 100% clear on the message I needed to relay
He offered to give me some advice so we had a phone conversation. After hearing what he had to say I knew I had to work with Don. I desperately needed his help.
Don has shared in his content many times the structure of his coaching calls but I know he’s tweaked some things since our time together.
He sent me an assignment to complete and then we would discuss those on our weekly Skype calls.
My first few assignments were to answer these five questions:
- What problems are you passionate about?
- What problems do you solve?
- What is the tangible value you provide through your services?
- What is the value some of the people in your life say you have provided? Include names and date/time you spoke with them?
- What do you want to be “known” for in the marketplace?
The other portion of this assignment dealt with your target audience. Here are those questions:
- Do you know how to connect your target market?
- How well do you know the people who buy from you, or the people you’d like to work with?
These questions seem simple enough right?
If you aren’t where you want to be there is a reason for that. You can’t blame it on not getting enough traffic to your site or people aren’t sharing your content enough. You can’t even blame it on not getting the comments you had hoped or it’s just going to take some time to build your list.
If you aren’t 100% clear on what business you are really in then how do you expect your audience to figure this out!
That’s why you hire a coach…
Don has a way of helping you define your business and your message.
With the way the internet is evolving today, if you’re not crystal clear on what it is that you do and how you can help your target audience then you’ve just lost a potential customer.
Who wants to struggle through yet another year or two trying to figure these things out on your own!
My Business Has Exploded
Even with Don’s coaching you still have to be realistic with your results.
For those of us who use our blogs as marketing tools to build our business it’s still going to take some time to build up this kind of content that’s directed just at your target audience.
It could even take you a few years to accomplish this but I believe if you’re a go getter then it won’t take you that long.
I started working with Don on April 8th and at the beginning of June my content was much more clear and spoke directly to my target audience.
With my business I offer free 30 minute consulting calls so we can go over the area my prospect is having the most difficulty with regarding their blogs. I’ll offer some advice and then share with them whether or not I can help them move forward. I leave it up to them to make the decision whether they’re ready to work with me or not.
By September 1 had 18 consulting calls set up and by the 16th of October I had 15 consulting calls set up. Out of the majority of those I’ve picked up several new clients. I’ve even picked up a couple clients who have only read a few of my posts. They knew just from my content that I was the one who could help them move forward.
Oh and let me be clear on something. I’m only posting this kind of content twice a month at this time. I post once a week and one of those weeks goes to a guest and the other to a roundup post.
Don’s coaching has literally exploded my business and I’m honored to have worked with him and I owe a great deal of my success moving forward to him.
Get Off The Fence
If you aren’t moving forward in your business then you owe yourself that free consulting call with Don. Let him help you understand what your issues are. It will be some of the best time you’ve ever spent.
The fact of the matter is that we cannot do this alone. We are not experts in every single area of our business which is why at times we need to either hire freelancers to do certain parts of it, purchase a course to learn the next step or hire a coach to teach us how we can move forward in our business.
Either way nothing will change until you do something about it.
Eight years is a long time to be online and it’s taken the last four and a half years to get me to where I am but you want to know something?
I’m getting my desired results now because I stepped up, I worked with someone who had the expertise in an area that I didn’t and now I’m able to help my clients even more with their own issues because of that.
Thank You Don
I want to thank Don for letting me not only share my story with you but for the time he spent helping me with my business.
There comes a time that we all have to step up so will it be this year for you, next, the year after or will we be seeing you slowly walk away from all the hard work you’ve done up to this point?
Gosh I hope not so schedule that call with Don today. Trust me when I say, you won’t ever regret that decision.
